Influence of Technology, Materials Available and Fashion Trends on Today's Corsets
Corsets have developed a great deal since the 17th Century to the 21st Century. Technology, available materials and fashion trends have all had a major role in these developments. As time has progressed so have all aspects of technology including the machinery used for sewing and weaving materials for corsets. Now days corsets along with almost every garment purchased from a store, is mass produced in a factory with industrial machinery and most fabrics are woven on a mechanical loom and many new fabrics are synthetic. However in the past all corsets were hand sewn and all materials were woven on a manual loom.
Another major influence are the materials that are available to us for making garments like corsets. In the past there were fewer materials available to people to make corsets and they had to use the resources they had around them. this includes using fabrics only made out of natural fibres such as wools, silks and cottons, but today we have a great variety of materials which are used for many purposes. Many of the fabrics that are used today are synthetic fibres of blends of natural and synthetic fibres. In the past the boning that supports the corset and keeps it firm and structured was whale bone but in modern times we use nylon or rigilene boning, sometimes plastic boning will be used but it does not offer as much support are nylon or rigilene.
Finally the fashion trends of the era have a great influence on what was worn during that period. As we all know fashion trends work in a cycle and many come back around for example the many women in today's society desire a small waist with a fuller bust and hips, known as the 'hourglass figure' which was also a desired look towards the end of the 1800s. Even though many looks come back into style there are always some changes and modifications made to the look to fit into the current fashion trends.
All three aspects - technology, available materials and fashion trends have had a great impact on the kind or corsets we have today, from what they are made with to how they are manufactured, to the fashion trends that influence the style of corsets.
